“Gay officers disheartened” - oh boo fucking hoo. Gay cops can still attend NY Pride, they just can’t attend NY Pride AS COPS. Pretending they’re being ~~~excluded~~~ just because they’re not allowed to show up in uniform and carrying weapons is disgustingly disingenuous.
And if cops want to attend Pride events as cops, they’ve got a whole long history of police brutality and queerphobic violence to undo in order to make queer people at Pride events feel safe around them. When no one at Pride feels threatened by the presence of cops, then there’ll be no reason to ban them anymore - but until then, the comfort of queer people at Pride comes before cop comfort.
(And before any idiot goes “wElL wHo WiLl KeEp PrIdE sAfE wItHoUt cOpS???”, cops have historically made queer people UNsafe. They’ve also, historically, stood around with their thumbs up their asses when queer people and Pride events actually needed their help. So really, people at Pride are not likely to notice any difference not having cops around aside from feeling more comfortable.
