It strikes me that there’s a disconnect between what “self-care” looks like for healthy people and for spoonies.

There’s a lot of work that goes into “self-care” for folks with mental or physical disorders/disabilities.

THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS.

yeah like for me, self care is getting up every couple hours, walking around the apartment, and putting some things away. executive dysfunction and depression stop me from cleaning and keep me slumped on the couch all day if I don’t actively work against it, and it’s not healthy to be sitting in a dirty apartment 24/7, so I have to self-care by getting up, doing some dishes, putting some laundry away, every hour or so. It’s a good balance for me; if I don’t do anything, things actively get worse, but if I force myself to do more than thereabouts, I get overwhelmed with how much needs to happen and I do none of it because I can’t choose what to do first.

But just getting up after a couple pages of writing, or a few days in Stardew, or an episode of a podcast, and unloading the dishwasher and putting away a few books? That’s doable, that’s work, and that helps me so, so much. Some days, I can manage more work - some days I NEED to do more work as self-care so I stay out of my head and feel like I’ve accomplished something. When your whole life is based around ‘how much can I do before I collapse’ and ‘there’s always something that needs to be done,’ that means that doing a task helps you so much more than it does healthy/neurotypical people, in both the long and short run.

Self-care is making sure you don’t overwork, yes, *absolutely,* but especially when you’re a spoonie or otherwise ill, it’s making sure you don’t let things get too bad either - because then you will have to overwork yourself later, and that’s just as bad.
