So I see that during my tumblr break a bunch of people decided to absolutely lose their shit in the notes of this.

First of all, to the anti-vaxxers: fuck you. That’s all.

Secondly to everyone who is like “well Pfizer put the money into research and development etc”: thanks for making my point. The research and development for this vaccine should have been done in the public sector and the public sector should have access to the best scientists in the world. Full responsibility for the vaccine’s distribution should be in the public sector. The second a vaccine was discovered, the details should have been shared in full with every public sector medical organisation in the world. We should not have to live in a world where the best resources are eaten up by the private sector, where an essential vaccine that everyone has a moral right to receive depends on the efficiency and good faith of a company motivated by profit.

Thirdly to everyone saying “it’s ok because people have said it will be free in America, Australia, etc”: there are more than 2 countries in the world and not all of them will have the funds to buy and distribute the vaccine in the quantities needed. The vaccine will not be “free” in any country- it will simply be paid for by governments rather than paid for at the point of access. We wouldn’t have this problem if it hadn’t been made in the private sector.

The UK has a population of 66 million. We have ordered 40 million doses. People will continue to die because of the extra cost associated with buying something generated in the private sector.

Also none of you are going to rob a vaccine truck, stop talking bullshit.

EDIT - also also, your entitlement to an essential vaccine has nothing to do with whether that company received public funding or not.
